In Sanskrit, yoga means “to unite”. This can mean many things to different people depending on what you seek from the practice. Yoga is originated in India, and is a popular form of exercise and relaxation performed throughout the world.
Yoga is a combined physical, spiritual and mental exercise used to attain states of transformation and clarity. Many people use it for exercise, to improve circulation and to relax. Traditionally yoga is part of Anchorthe practice in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism religions.
There are many different types of yoga: Ashtanga, Iyengar or Bikram Yoga, which is done in a hot environment. All the practices differ slightly in the way the breath is used throughout the movements and how long certain poses are held for.
The physical practice of yoga stretches and strengthens muscles. It is one of the best full body workouts because it is not focused on any one part or muscle group, but manages to work a variety throughout the practice. Balance, strength and flexibility will all increase with regular, correct yoga practice.
Yoga for the mental state can increase clarity and provoke deeper thinking. Practice of asanas or postures combined with controlled breathing techniques and chanting can bring one closer to enlightenment, or assist one in the transformation of the current mental state. Singing “om” as a group has a phenomenal affect.
